a semi-project i’ve given to myself this summer.

color final

archival inkjet prints from 8 – 120 negatives (400 ISO NC). each taken with an antique brownie no. 2 camera (1931).

simultaneously, i dreamt of blossoms, crawling into bed with me. they made a rope around my neck and pushed the air out of my lungs so i would stay with them forever. we slept.

this project was more about the process of creating the portraits, rather than the actual content of the photos themselves. each photo was taken with an antique brownie no. 2 camera. because this camera is over 8 decades old, it doesn’t have a self timer trigger, therefore i had to create the self portraits by myself. a piece of parcel string was tied to the shutter release, and in a series of maneuvers (which obviously got better as the shoots progressed), i pulled the shutter myself, not knowing what the picture would actually look like (much like our dreams). the varying content and props within the pieces all relate to common dream themes from the early 1900s (as taken from a book published in the 50s, so i’m going to go ahead and assume they knew what they were talking about).

as if i haven’t done enough work on memory/dreams/nostalgia, my photo final is an exploration into common dreams and their meanings. with that said, these prints are extremely ambiguous. i used my brownie no. 2 camera to take self-portraits of myself in bed. the concept applies more to the process of taking the photos than what the viewer is actually looking at. since the brownie is a box camera without any controls on it, i had to devise a way of taking my own picture without a self-timer. i ended up tying a string to the cameras shutter release, which proved harder to pull than i expected. by trying to control the pictures, without actually knowing what they would look like, the process relates slightly to dreaming. people often try to control their dreams, and some have succeeded, but when we go to bed at night, we can never really be sure of the final result. taking these pictures was me gambling with my camera. here’s the result of my first few roles. i had to include some of the contact sheet c-prints because sometimes they turned out more beautiful than the actual prints themselves.
